The summer is here and it’s July! Time for a brand new Green Bean Challenge. This month’s we’ll be learning all about some very important little insects:
In the last five years we have seen a decline of 45% of our commercial honeybees here in the UK and it’s vital we help these little pollinators survive. We’re dedicating a whole month to finding out why we need bees and what we can do to help.
We’ll be hearing from our expert bean, bee keeper and small business owner Michelle of the Little Honey Bee Company, to learn about the challenges she faces in keeping her bees and I’ll be reviewing some of her homemade honey based products.
There’ll be information on campaigns, how you can sponsor a bee hive, some of the species of bees you may find in your UK garden, which plants you can grow to help encourage these friendly fellas, some honey based recipes, and finally, what would happen if bees disappeared completely.
Just like the bees, I’ll be out foraging too, with Lisa from Edulis Wild Foods and I can’t wait to tell you all about my first foraging experience. Of course there will be all the regulars: Bloomin’ Updates, #BuyLocal, What’s Bean Going On and Bean’s Must Haves.
We’d love to know whether you’re joining us in the challenge this month and if you have bees in your garden, so don’t forget to let us know in the comments and share your pictures with us on the blog, on twitter (@beantweeting), or Instagram (@writerDSNelson). Together we can do our bit for Earth and make sure it’s still here for every Bean.
