My Pledge For World Earth Day

Today is World Earth Day! A chance to celebrate our planet and pledge to do something more to help preserve it.

World Earth Day was created in 1970 and was the idea of U.S. Senator, Gaylord Nelson. It’s been celebrated ever since and you can find out more about it here.

So what am I going to pledge for World Earth Day?

World earth day

My pledge is a mixture of some of the previous Green Bean Challenges but this one’s a year challenge. It’s my intention that every Green Bean Challenge should be continued throughout the year but occasionally, because we are human, the ball gets dropped.

So, for a year challenge, I’m going to pledge to do two things when shopping:

  • Avoid none-recyclable waste
  • Buy local

When I buy something I will be asking myself:

  • Do I already have something that does this job?
  • Can I recycle the packaging or can I get it with no packaging at all?
  • Can I buy it locally?

This will help me to reduce waste, upcycle and support the local economy. I’ll check in each month and let you know how I’m doing.

I have yet to think of a witty tag line/hashtag for this challenge so all suggestions are welcome. Something like Buy Brighter? What do you reckon? I’d love to hear your ideas.

I’d also love to know what you’re doing or pledging for World Earth Day, so let me know below and just for fun…what’s the most ridiculous packaging you ever seen? (Photos are welcome).

I like those pledges. They’re simple, yet can make a big difference. I think a key to sustainability is each of us doing small things that we can do as a matter of course. If we all pitch in, real change can happen.
